Coney Island, the Brooklyn seaside resort, is the setting for this scene of women gathered for a picnic on the sand. The picture dates from between 1900 and 1905 and comes from a glass negative in the Detroit Publishing Company Collection, a firm known for its broad catalog of American views from the turn of the twentieth century. Beach outings like this were a popular way for city residents to escape crowded neighborhoods in summer, and the informal meal spread on open sand shows how leisure at the shore was being enjoyed in those years.
