Few houses in the Detroit Publishing Company's Michigan views are recorded as specifically as this one: the residence of Dr. Henry C. Potter in Saginaw, preserved on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Saginaw grew prosperous in the late nineteenth century as sawmills along the Saginaw River processed the region's white pine, and many of its substantial homes were built by families whose fortunes rested on lumber and related trades. The Detroit Publishing Company, active from the 1890s into the 1920s, photographed towns and houses across the country for its catalog of views, so this picture captures a residence in the years just after 1900.
