Williams College, founded in 1793 in the Berkshire hills of northwestern Massachusetts, sits where its campus meets the town's Main Street, and this glass negative records that meeting point in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large-format views of American towns, landscapes and institutions for sale to the public, listed the scene in its 1906 catalog. Because the picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch dry plate negative, it preserves far more fine detail than a printed postcard could, showing the street, buildings and trees as they stood before the automobile reshaped small college towns.
