The New Ocean House was one of the large summer hotels on the rocky shore of Swampscott, a seaside town just north of Boston, and this view centers on its grounds and the beach below. Hotels like it drew wealthy families from Boston and other cities for summer stays, so the picture captures a leisure economy built around sea air and bathing. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate view around 1907, sold travel views of resorts and scenic places to a national market, so the picture also shows how such destinations were presented to vacationers at the time.
