Ross' pavilion stood on the sand at Ocean Grove, the Methodist camp-meeting resort on the New Jersey shore, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative records a crowd gathered on the beach there around 1905. Ocean Grove was founded in 1869 as a religious retreat with strict rules on Sabbath conduct, so its seaside amusements were more restrained than those at neighboring resorts. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of American views for travel and sale around the turn of the century, made the negative. Its crowded beach scene offers a glimpse of how holiday visitors used the shore at that time.
