Few schools in Virginia have a more consequential history than the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, shown here with its waterfront in view. Founded in 1868 by the American Missionary Association and Samuel Chapman Armstrong, the school trained formerly enslaved people and their children as teachers and farmers, and Booker T. Washington was among its best-known students. The Detroit Publishing Company made this large glass negative between 1890 and 1906, when it was recording American towns, landmarks and institutions across the country. The shoreline in the view reflects the campus's位置 on the waters of Hampton Roads.
