Hampton, Virginia, on the shores of Hampton Roads, was long one of the centers of the Chesapeake oyster trade, and this view turns to the shellfish themselves: a heap of oysters piled high as the raw material of a working waterfront. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between about 1900 and 1920 documenting American towns, industries and landscapes for commercial sale. Pictures like this one record a trade that depended on hand labor and seasonal harvests, and they show how central shellfish were to the coastal economy of the period.
