The Granite Building stood on the corner of Main and St. Paul streets in Rochester, New York, and this glass negative captures it in the years before 1910, when the city was a busy center of flour milling, shoemaking and the Eastman Kodak works. Built in 1868 as one of the first large commercial blocks in the city, it was among the tallest office buildings in Rochester in its day and was named for the granite that faced its lower stories. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch negative, sent photographers across the country to document such landmarks for postcards and promotional albums, so the view also preserves the streetscape around it.
