A quiet creek winding through Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, New York, is the subject here, a reminder that the city had turned its river valley into public parkland by the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document scenic places and sold the images as postcards and color prints, made this glass-plate negative around 1908. Its views of towns, parks and waterways appealed to travelers and to people who wanted to see the American landscape without leaving home. The emphasis on water and trees rather than buildings reflects the period's taste for pastoral scenes in city parks.
