A wooded stream in Amherst, Massachusetts, is the subject here, and the title's word "sylvan" points to the shaded, tree-lined character of its banks. The picture dates to about 1908 and survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced many landscape and town views of the United States in the early twentieth century. The negative came to the collection as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Its quiet, unpopulated scene offers a useful record of a rural New England setting in that period.
