Weston Tower stands in Derryfield Park in Manchester, New Hampshire, a city on the Merrimack River, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative records it as a landmark of the park's hillside grounds. The picture was made between about 1910 and 1920, when observation towers were popular in city parks and on scenic summits as places to look out over the surrounding town and countryside. It comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed and promoted American scenery and towns for sale as views and souvenirs. The glass plate format gives the image a sharp, detailed record of the structure and its setting.
