Douglass Point on Upper Saranac Lake is the setting here, and the negative carries a second title that names it as the R.D. Douglass Camp, a private retreat in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. The Adirondacks drew wealthy families and sportsmen to their lakes from the later 1800s onward, and many of these lakeside camps were built as summer retreats. The notes mention a structure that may be a boathouse, a useful clue to how the shoreline was used. The plate is a large 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented resorts and scenery across the country around 1900.
