Pleasant Street in Laconia, New Hampshire, is shown here as a quiet residential row, with houses and tree-lined sidewalks rather than the mills and commercial blocks that defined much of the city's economy. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass plate negative, made around 1908 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American towns and landscapes. Laconia grew up along the Winnipesaukee River, and its streets of modest homes reflect the working families who lived near the factories. Glass plates like this one preserve fine detail, so the street and its houses can still be studied closely.
