The name "Pocahontas" painted on the steamboat in the foreground anchors this view of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's waterfront at Newport News, Virginia. The railway's terminus there linked its rail lines to ferries and steamboats on Hampton Roads, moving freight and passengers between trains and water transport. Photographed sometime between 1907 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, the glass negative shows how the piers and the working boats beside them served a port that was becoming important for coal shipping.
