Two glass negatives, joined into a wide panorama, record the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company yard on the James River in Virginia, a works that by the early 1900s was building warships for the U.S. Navy. The company was established in 1886 under railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, and its dry docks allowed it to handle large hulls that few American yards could accommodate. Made between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, the paired plates convey the scale of the works in a way a single frame could not.
