Few American industrial sites of the early 1900s were as large as the yard at Newport News, on the James River in Virginia, and this broad view shows its waterfront as a working complex of slips, cranes, and structures. The yard was founded in 1886 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which was controlled by Collis P. Huntington, and by about 1905 it had grown into one of the country's major builders of large steel ships. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document cities, railroads, and industry for commercial sale. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection makes it a useful record of the yard during the years it was expanding.
