Long wooden and iron piers jutting into the James River mark the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's terminal at Newport News, Virginia, in this view from about 1905. The railway used the site to move coal from its western mines to ships, making the waterfront one of the busiest coal-shipping points on the East Coast. The picture comes from a glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American scenes, and it shows how heavily the railroad and shipping facilities depended on one another at the turn of the century.
