The park here is most likely Christopher Newport Park, named for the English sea captain who led the expedition that brought settlers to Jamestown in 1607, and the building beside it may be the Hampton Roads Military Academy, as the catalog notes suggest. Newport News grew quickly around 1900 as a shipping and rail terminus on Hampton Roads, and it drew families and schools looking for a healthy waterfront setting. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns, parks, and institutions for travel promotion in the early 1900s. Its ornate casino and leafy grounds show how civic spaces were designed to impress visitors.
