Touro Park is a small public green in Newport, Rhode Island, and this view records the memorials that stand among its paths around 1905, the subject the record highlights. The park takes its name from the Touro family, whose community is also tied to the nearby Touro Synagogue, dedicated in 1763 and the oldest surviving synagogue building in the United States. The picture is a dry plate glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large photographic survey of American towns and scenery in the early twentieth century. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
