A government building in Newport News, Virginia, is the subject of this view, made around 1905 on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative. Newport News grew quickly after the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway opened its shipyard there in 1886, and a government building in a busy port town like this one would have housed offices serving shipping, postal, and official business. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this plate, traveled widely to photograph American towns, railroads, and scenery and sold the views to the public. Its negatives give a useful record of how civic architecture looked as the city expanded.
