Rush Christopher Hawkins's regiment, the 9th New York Infantry, stood out in 1861 for adopting the loose, braided dress of French Zouaves. This small pencil sketch records its camp at Newport News, the Virginia port that Union forces occupied in the first months of the Civil War. Carts and wagons appear in the scene, offering a quiet view of the supply work that kept a volunteer army running. Drawn on a sheet only about four by six and a half inches, it preserves an intimate glimpse of camp life during the war's opening summer.
