Few photographs from this period show Black students training for skilled shipyard trades, which is what sets this image apart from the other views on the board. The print records young men learning shipbuilding work at Newport News, Virginia, where the shipyard was then one of the largest employers in the region. Vocational training of this kind was closely tied to Hampton Institute, the school that trained many African American students in trades as well as academics after the Civil War. Frances Benjamin Johnston made a series of photographs of Hampton and its students around 1899 and 1900, and this image belongs to that body of work.
