Few early submarines were launched with the Lake's distinctive "even-keel" design, which Simon Lake built to keep the hull level as the boat moved, a principle he pursued for years. This photograph records the launch at Newport News, Virginia, on February 27, 1906, when the shipyard was becoming a major center for naval and commercial construction. The Lake Torpedo Boat Company, which issued the print under its copyright, was one of several American firms then experimenting with undersea craft, and its work helped shape the submarines that followed. The image offers a rare look at one of those early experiments taking shape on the Virginia waterfront.
