Anne P. Cahall is the sponsor named in this record, the woman chosen to christen the battleship U.S.S. Delaware when it was launched at Newport News, Virginia, on February 6, 1909. Sponsors were traditionally chosen to name a warship in a public ceremony, a custom that tied the ship to a local family or patron. The Delaware was among the Navy's new dreadnought-era battleships, built as the United States expanded its fleet in the early twentieth century. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that documented events of the period.
