Launches at the Newport News shipyard in Virginia drew crowds of workers, officials and guests, and this glass negative records the christening of a vessel named PROTEUS. The record gives no date, but the name suggests the Navy's submarine tender built at the yard, though the record does not confirm which ship it shows. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative format reflects that era's photography, when pictures were captured on fragile plates before film became standard.
