Two glass negatives joined into a panorama show the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company yard on Hampton Roads in Virginia, a long stretch of waterfront that the wide format lets the viewer take in at once. The company was founded in 1886 and grew into one of the country's major shipbuilders, and by the early 1900s its docks were producing merchant vessels and warships for the expanding U.S. Navy. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to record towns, industry and scenery around 1900, made the image.
