Washington Square and Trinity Church show a open civic plaza in Newport News, Virginia, anchored by a church, at a time when the city was growing quickly. The town developed around the coal piers of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and the shipyard founded in 1886, which drew workers and new residents to the area. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large catalog of American scenes, made this view on a 5 by 7 inch glass negative. Its date falls between 1890 and 1906, estimated from the company's 1906 catalog, so the scene captures the city in its early boom years.
