The junction of Washington Square, Thames Street, and Touro Street sits at the heart of Newport's old town center. The streets nearby lead toward the Touro Synagogue, completed in 1763 and the oldest surviving synagogue in the United States. The square takes its name from George Washington, who visited Newport in 1781 while French forces were stationed in the city. The caption card gives no date for the photograph, so the view is best read as a record of the downtown streetscape rather than a fixed moment.
