Despite the "Newport" in its title, this scene shows the Union sloop-of-war *Cumberland* going down in Hampton Roads, Virginia, near Newport News, not the Rhode Island city. On March 8, 1862, the Confederate ironclad CSS *Virginia* rammed her, and as the water rose, her crew kept firing and her colors were reported still flying. The next day the Union ironclad *Monitor* arrived, and the two armored ships fought the first battle between ironclad warships. The sinking showed how quickly iron-armored vessels could make wooden fleets obsolete.
