The yacht squadron gathered at Newport is a color halftone reproduction of a 1870s scene of sailing yachts moored or under way off the Rhode Island resort. Newport was then a fashionable summer colony, and its harbor drew wealthy owners who raced and cruised their vessels there each season. The yachts of the decade were large, gaff-rigged boats with long bowsprits and heavy sail plans, and their ranked arrangement in a group shows how the sport was organized around clubs and annual fleet gatherings. The publication itself dates from 1974, when a Connecticut firm issued the color print for Newport sellers, so it reflects a later revival of interest in the town's maritime past.
