This wood engraving shows President Chester A. Arthur enjoying a summer outing on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island. Drawn by W.P. Snyder, it appeared in the September 6, 1884, issue of *Harper's Weekly*, a popular illustrated newspaper that often followed public figures away from the capital. Bellevue Avenue was the showpiece of Newport's Gilded Age summer colony, where wealthy families built large seaside cottages and drove their carriages along the road to be seen. Arthur, president from 1881 to 1885, appears here during a summer away from Washington, and the scene captures the fashionable social life of the period.
