Most views of Newport's summer estates show their formal façades, but this one turns to the service side, the garage doors of the Hamilton Rice house. Alexander Hamilton Rice, a physician and geographer, later became known for his expeditions into the Amazon basin. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent American photographer of architecture and gardens, made the picture between 1917 and 1927, when Newport's estates were at the height of their social prominence. Its focus on utilitarian outbuildings offers a useful counterpoint to the showpieces the city is usually known for.
