From the side, this view of the Hamilton Rice house in Newport, Rhode Island, shows how the residence sat within its grounds rather than presenting a formal face to the street. Alexander Hamilton Rice, a physician and geographer who later became known for his expeditions into the Amazon basin, was one of many wealthy families who built seasonal homes in Newport during the city's Gilded Age heyday. The photograph comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston collection, which records American houses and gardens in the early twentieth century. Its date is given only as a span between 1917 and 1927.
