A c1905 view from the Detroit Publishing Company shows the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company yard during the noon hour, when work on the docks and hulls paused. Collis P. Huntington's railroad interests founded the yard in 1886 on the James River, and by the early 1900s it was one of the largest shipbuilders in the country. The company's glass-plate negatives of industrial sites like this one document a working landscape on the Virginia coast during a period of rapid growth in American shipbuilding.
