The Hotel Warwick, shown here beside the lawns of Christopher Newport Park, stood in a Virginia town that was growing fast around its shipyards and rail lines in the years before 1910. The park honors Captain Christopher Newport, the English mariner who brought settlers to Jamestown in 1607. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of towns and resorts to railroads and travel promoters, so the scene was likely meant to show visitors a prosperous, orderly place.
