Slipways at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company are the focus here, with hulls set on their inclined building ways along the Virginia waterfront. The yard was founded in 1886 by Collis P. Huntington, the railroad financier, and grew into one of the largest shipbuilders in the country. The image is a large 8 by 10 inch glass negative of the kind Detroit Publishing Company used for its views of American towns, industries and landscapes, and its date of about 1905 is an estimate.
