Few pictures on this board show a sentry at work, and this one puts a Marine guard at the gate of the Naval War College on Coaster's Harbor Island in Newport, Rhode Island. The college was founded in 1884 under Rear Admiral Stephen B. Luce as a place for senior naval officers to study strategy, tactics and the conduct of war, and it occupied the island's old Naval Training Station grounds. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American towns and institutions around the turn of the century, made the glass negative at the 8 x 10 inch size it used for its landscape and institutional work. The record dates the image to between 1890 and 1901.
