Looking east across Morecambe, the Lancashire seaside resort on the shore of Morecambe Bay, this view shows a parade in progress sometime between about 1890 and 1900. It is a photochrom, a process that added color by printing from several stone lithographic plates made from a black-and-white photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints in bound catalogues of English views, and this one is listed in its 1905 edition. Morecambe grew as a holiday destination in the later nineteenth century once rail links brought visitors from industrial towns inland, so the crowds here offer a useful glimpse of popular seaside leisure of the period.
