Yachts moored off the East Parade give this view of Southend-on-Sea its character, with the promenade running along the Thames estuary where pleasure boats and strollers shared the waterfront. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland and widely used in Britain, which built up vivid tints from photographs printed from lithographic stones. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America through its catalogues, and this one appeared in its 1905 Views of England section, offering American buyers a glimpse of an English seaside resort in its Victorian heyday.
