Cowes marine parade, the seafront promenade at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, was a fashionable place to stroll in the 1890s, when the town was closely tied to yachting and the summer regattas on the Solent. This print uses the photochrom process, a color method developed in Switzerland that built up an image from several lithographic stones. The Detroit Publishing Company sold it in America and listed it as print number 11187 in its 1905 catalog of England views. Promenades like this one were places for visitors to walk and be seen, which makes the scene a useful record of seaside leisure at the end of the century.
