Strollers crowd the promenade in this view taken from the pier at Southport, the Lancashire seaside resort whose long pier and esplanade drew holidaymakers through the late 1800s. The photochrom process behind the print was a Swiss method of building color from several stone impressions, which gave the sea-front and crowds a soft, painted quality. Detroit Publishing Company issued the view in its England catalog, offering American audiences a glimpse of British resort life at the end of the century.
