Taunton, the Somerset market town, provides the setting, and the title's own correction, "parade (i.e. promenade)," suggests people strolling through the market-day crowd rather than marching in formation. The image was made with the Photochrom process, a color method developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s and 1890s that built up color from several printing stones over a black-and-white photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held the American rights, listed it as number 11354 in its 1905 catalog of English views.
