North Parade in Southwell, a small town in Nottinghamshire, England, is shown here as a tree-lined promenade, a place for strolling rather than a procession, as the title's "promenade" note suggests. The print uses photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that built up a finished image from several lithographic stones, and it comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of English views. Southwell Minster, the historic church nearby, drew most visitors to the town, so this street scene offers a quieter look at everyday life there.
