Anchor Head was a stretch of Weston-super-Mare's seafront, and this photochrom shows the promenade there in the 1890s, when the Somerset resort was drawing holidaymakers from Bristol and the Midlands. The title's "promenade" refers to the older custom of strolling slowly along the front to see and be seen, so the crowd of walkers is the real subject, not a formal procession. The image comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss technique that combined several color plates into a finished print with a painted look. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in the United States, and its 1905 catalog listed this scene among its English views. Look at the clothing and parasols for a sense of late Victorian seaside fashion.
