The picture pairs a street procession with the pier at Morecambe, the Lancashire seaside resort on the edge of Morecambe Bay. Morecambe grew rapidly as a holiday town once rail links brought visitors from industrial towns in the north of England, and piers and parades were central to its summer life. This print is a photochrom, made by a Swiss process that used several stone lithographs to build up color over a photograph. The Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in the United States in its 1905 catalog of English views, so it shows a late Victorian resort as it was marketed to American buyers.
