West Parade in Southend-on-Sea, on the Essex coast, presents one of the seaside promenades that drew holidaymakers from London and elsewhere in the late Victorian years. The print is a photochrom, an early color process in which a photograph was transferred to several lithographic stones, one for each color, and the results were retouched by hand. Detroit Publishing Company sold this view in the United States through its 1905 catalog J, where it appears as number 10218 in a group of English views. As a record of a resort from the late nineteenth century, it shows how the English seaside presented itself to visitors.
