Clacton-on-Sea, a seaside resort on the Essex coast, is the place named in this view of a parade, which the record dates to roughly the 1890s. It is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that produced multicolored prints from photographs using stone lithography. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held the American rights to the process, issued it as print number 11349 in its 1905 catalog J, part of a series of English views. Such prints were popular travel souvenirs, and their bright tones offer a sense of holiday color that black-and-white photographs of the period could not provide.
