Skegness, a seaside resort on the Lincolnshire coast, is the place that sets this view apart from the many parade pictures on the board. The photochrom process, a early color printing method that Detroit Publishing Company used for its travel views, gives the crowd and street a soft, painted look. The record dates the image to the 1890s, when Skegness was growing rapidly as a holiday destination after the railway reached it in 1875. The print appeared in the company's 1905 catalog of English views, so it was made for travelers and armchair visitors who wanted a glimpse of seaside life abroad.
