Skegness, a seaside resort on the Lincolnshire coast, is the setting here, and the view pairs a tower with a parade down the front. Seaside towns like Skegness grew quickly in the late 1800s after rail lines brought holidaymakers from inland cities, and their promenades filled with processions, bands and crowds on fine days. This print is a photochrom, a process that added hand-applied color to a photographic image through a series of lithographic stones. Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in its 1905 catalog of English views, which sold these colorful scenes to American buyers.
