Herne Bay, a seaside town on the north Kent coast, is the subject here, and the broad promenade of South Parade gives this view its character. Photochrom prints like this one were made by the Swiss firm Photoglob and sold in the United States through the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this image in its 1905 catalog of English views. Its colors were applied from multiple stone or plate impressions, so the pastel tones of the sea front and the gardens still look fresh. The date is an estimate, placed somewhere in the 1890s, when such sea resorts were drawing growing numbers of holiday visitors by train.
